Course Outline

Vicarious trauma is the emotional residue of bearing witness to the pain, fear, and terror that trauma survivors have endure. Vicarious trauma may worsen following repeated exposure; exacerbated by presenting a calm façade whilst hearing repeatedly about trauma or violence.

Sometimes it is known as secondary trauma. Vicarious trauma is not the same as “burnout”, which is job-related chronic stress that has built up over time.
