Trauma Skilled Approach
The Transforming Trauma National Training Framework sets out 4 levels of training for different parts of the workforce. This training sits at the Informed Skilled Level Two for those with direct and frequent contact with people who may be survivors of trauma.
It is assumed that participants will already have knowledge at an introductory level about trauma through experience or previous training.
Aim
To be able to develop boundaried working relationships in order to support survivors of trauma while minimising the likelihood of re-traumitisation.
This training will use the Trauma Informed Approach:
Know and understand about trauma (realise)

Understand the potential for trauma to impact on a person's interpersonal, emotional and cognitive functioning

Know the links between childhood trauma, adversity (Adverse Childhood Experiences) and the range of mental health diagnoses that trauma survivors attract

Be aware of why trauma is everybody’s business

Understand trauma survivors coping strategies (risks to self) as attempts to cope with the impact of trauma.
Recognise signs of trauma

Understand the range of factors that mediate a trauma survivor’s response to trauma

Understand the potential for people affected by trauma to experience distress when memories of the trauma are triggered by situations (taking of written representation)
Respond to the trauma

Explore the professional relationship including recognising where the experience of trauma is having an effect on a person's relationship with the worker and/or the service

Know what therapeutic or psychological support is available and where and how to refer them on.

Explore the trauma-informed principles, to support the reduction of triggering trauma related distress and physical risks to workers
Resist making it worse/ do no more harm

Explore how survivors of trauma can be supported to safely disclose trauma

Explore participants ability to tolerate being exposed to the trauma narratives

Explore how participants own experiences and values might be impacting on the ability to hear and pay attention to trauma narratives

Support participants to understand their own self-care needs.
Trainer
Emily Steedman has over 13 years’ experience of working with Health in Mind. Currently she is a Project Worker with the Trauma Support Services. Emily has a keen interest and passion for using creative tools to foster collective advocacy and raise awareness of the difficulties and barriers faced by people affected by trauma. She has an MSc in Community Education and many years of experience facilitating workshops.

If you need to cancel your booking and give more than 30 days’ notice, we will refund 50% of your fee. There is a non-refundable administration fee of £5 for cancellations and refunds. If due to unforeseen circumstances we have to change the course date, and it is not suitable for you, we will refund 100% of the payment.
