Do you have a few hours to spare each week and are you keen to put them to good use?

Volunteers are so important to Health in Mind. They bring new skills, knowledge, and experience, enriching our services and contributing to positive mental wellbeing wherever they are.

Many of our volunteers initially came to us as service users and we welcome those who have lived experience they can share or have supported someone with mental health issues.

Why volunteer?

Your own life experiences could encourage and support others during difficult times, and at the same time, you could increase your confidence and skills by working in a supported, professional environment?

Perhaps you are on a career break; retired from your full-time occupation or are a student wanting to supplement your studies with some real work experience.

We are often looking for people with:

Administration skills – from answering telephones to filing, managing correspondence and completing general paperwork
Communication skills – particularly people who are comfortable talking to people about our services
Language skills – particularly from black and minority ethnic groups
IT skills – to answer general helpdesk style queries and knowledge of databases would also be beneficial
Motivational skills - particularly those able to volunteer as a befriender, to help people feel less isolated and work towards their goals.

For many, volunteering is a chance to give back. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and particularly anyone who has lived experience of mental ill-health or has supported someone who has. Some roles require regular weekly hours, some have very flexible hours and others are only occasional. However much or little time you have to give; we have something you can do to help.

Whatever your skills or experience we would be delighted to welcome you to our team.

But even if you have not lived with mental ill health, we still need you. Since, according to the Office for National Statistics, 1 in 4 people will suffer from a mental health issue. You probably know someone who has experienced poor mental wellbeing, so why not come along and help us reduce stigma and work towards a mentally healthy Scotland.

Quality support and training

If you need more persuading, our quality volunteering programme has been awarded Investing in Volunteers status for the third time.

Our success lies in our commitment to creating a positive two-way exchange: you offer your time, experience and skills and in return, we can offer you the opportunity to participate in quality training, learn new skills, build up your confidence and meet new people.

Health in Mind supports vulnerable people and so the majority of our volunteer roles require you to be a member of the PVG scheme and to have a Disclosure check. You can find out more at We will support you to get this check.

If you have lived or worked overseas in the last 10 years, we will also require a criminal record check from the country in which you lived/worked. So why not register your interest today and together we can promote positive mental health and wellbeing across Scotland.
