New Year resolutions (December 2020)

This is traditionally a time when we make New Year Resolutions. Many of us have good intentions at the beginning of January which for different reasons, we then struggle to achieve a few weeks later.

Achieving our resolutions is hard every January, when it's cold and dark, and it’s likely to be harder still with the restrictions we face due to the pandemic. Studies of how people overcome depression focus on taking action in four areas of our lives: Goals, Values, Mastery and Pleasure.

So, set yourself a resolution/goal, but when doing so, make sure that it is SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timed). Then ask yourself:

1.Values – what matters to me? Am I doing enough of what is important to me? Am I fully living the life that I want to live?

2. Pleasure – what do I enjoy doing? What did I used to enjoy? When do I feel at my most relaxed and fulfilled?

3. Mastery– what am I good at? When do I feel proud ofmyself? What do other people admire in me?

Once you have answered these questions, write down steps you can take to address any areas where you feel you are not doing enough. Focus on changes that are within your control that you can make now.

Tell someone else what steps you are going to take and ask them to check in with you during the month to see how it is going. We are more likely to make changes if we have shared them with someone we trust.

Good luck!
