Adjusting to working from home (Covid-19)

Working from home for a period of time can take some getting used to, particularly if you haven’t done it before.

We’ve pulled together some tips – let us know if there’s anything else you do that helps and we can update the page.

Make sure you get dressed

If we’re not leaving the house, it can be tempting to work in our pyjamas. Getting dressed and ready for the day can help put you in the right mindset for the day ahead.

Feeling connected

Going from being in an office to working alone can be unsettling. It’s normal to feel lonely, disconnected and isolated at times. Try to proactively stay in touch with others. Email your colleagues more often, arrange a video call or pick up the phone.

What about scheduling in a regular call with a colleague each day?

Create structure

Losing the routine of being in the office can be disorientating. Try to stick to the same schedule that you have when you go into the office. Get up at the same time, and do all the things you usually would do to get ready for work. If you would normally create a to-do list in the morning, make a to-do list and plan out your day.

Schedule breaks

Make sure that you are still taking your breaks, including your full lunch break. Breaks can help you feel recharged and more focused.

Have boundaries

When we are working from home it’s easy to blur the boundaries between work space and personal space. This can make it hard for us to switch off at the end of the day.
To help, choose a spot for your ‘office’ that is away from distractions. Make sure you do not work from your bed as this could impact your sleep.

The boundaries you set are also important for other people who may be sharing the same space as you. Make sure you talk to those around you and agree a way of working that respects everyone’s needs.

Move

When you’re working from home, you can often find yourself moving less. Take some time to keep yourself moving, such as doing some gentle stretches. If your commute to work used to include walking, take a gentle stroll around the block to get some fresh air.

Find the little things

Think about the benefits that working from home can bring. Does it mean you get to cook yourself a tasty lunch? Do you get to spend more time with your pets? Whatever it is, find the little things about working from home that bring you happiness.
