‘I discovered Health in Mind a very long time ago. I first moved to Edinburgh in 2012, from Greece. For some reason I knew about Health in Mind, I don’t know exactly how. I was aware of the kind of work they do.
I work with females mostly, who have experienced childhood sexual abuse. There is something about, at the moment, supporting women to talk about it, and to see how much power they have, and how much they can change their everyday life, regardless of all the difficult and traumatic things that have happened to them, it is very empowering, for myself too, to see that.
When I was 19 or 20, I was studying psychology and we were doing long placements. I was in a psychiatric clinic, and there were patients who had been living there for a long time. There was something happening with the people I was working with, it was about the relationship. The more I built a relationship with them, the more they became open and honest about who they are. That was something to me, it made me feel like, to forget about a diagnosis, there is something about the relationship, being honest with a person, you know, truly listening to each other. To connect on that level.'
