Sophia's 10K Challenge

On Sunday 22 September 2019 Sophia England, one of Health in Mind's counsellors and psychotherapists, ran the Scottish 10K and raised over £550 by passionately promoting mental health awareness. Sophia also achieved a personal best of 50 minutes and 29 seconds.

Sophia says "Being a telephone counsellor for Health in Mind's Trauma Counselling Line Scotland (TCLS) service, I've heard how useful and vital the service has been in facilitating change in people's lives. People with mental health difficulties are among the most socially excluded people in the UK, and social exclusion is associated with poorer physical and psychological health. They are also more likely to have a poor diet, smoke, drink alcohol or be overweight. Research undertaken by Staffordshire University, which involved parkrunners who identified as having experienced mental health difficulties, concluded that volunteering, being outside and participating in a community activity can be beneficial. Participants reported that parkrun gives them a sense of identity – being part of the ‘parkrun community’ and reducing the stigma associated with mental health difficulties."

"When I'm not wearing my TCLS service telephone headset, I try to lace up my trainers and run. Self care is very important to me and I've found exercise not only helps take care of my physical health, it also supports my mental heath and wellbeing too."

TCLS is a free telephone counselling service for adults who experienced sexual, emotional, physical, psychological, spiritual abuse or neglect as a child. The service is open to people living in Scotland from the Black Minority Ethnic (BME) community, people who identify as having a disability (mental or physical) or people living in certain remote or rural areas. The service provides callers with a regular weekly appointment with the same counsellor for up to a year. Having processed and made sense of their traumatic experiences, towards the end of the counselling work, people often feel a sense of closure from the past and empowered about their future.
