'I’m the Finance Manager here, and before this, I did the same thing in financial services, and before that, in practice. This world is very different. Just even, the structure of the organisation. It’s much more relaxed here, I’ve always worked in really friendly workplaces, but the general caring attitude here, is nice.

I am not as front facing as some of the staff, so I don’t have a great deal of interaction with the people being supported, unless I have to jump in at reception, which is always fun.
It’s a really warm, person centred organisation. It’s very friendly; our staff are caring and genuinely interested in people and their journeys.

People feel they are making a contribution to something genuinely good, and coming from a more corporate background, that’s a really nice thing to see.

I do think that the organisation and its management live that ethos as well, so it’s quite easy for that to spread. They genuinely believe in our values, and our mission, and what we’re doing here, and I think that comes across, and I think that’s why staff are so engaged, and why it’s a special place to work.

As a teenager, we had a bereavement in the family, and to see the impact that it had on close family members, I was maybe 14, and to be in a house where that’s hanging over everything, for years, I guess. That was probably my first insight in to mental health, although I probably wouldn’t have described it as that at the time.

I would have just said it was sadness, but actually, when that’s gripping you, for such a long time, I think, that’s probably when it’s more likely to be depression, and you might need help to get out of that cycle. I think, that’s probably my first experience, to see it impact other people, and then that being a reoccurring thing that cropped up now and again.

Health in Mind is a space to address this, and we offer a huge range of services helping with lots of different needs. I think it’s about empowering people to make positive changes in their life. It’s not going to be a magic wand, but it’s giving people the tools to cope and manage and flourish, but it is not a magic wand, it takes work, but hopefully the skills and tools learned can see people through the rest of their life, meaning that when the next thing happens, it’s not setting them back to square one again.’
