'Three years ago, coming up on three years, I found Health in Mind. My story is that I lost my job through ill-health, I had had ill-health most of my life. I was born with brain damage, and I was diagnosed with dyspraxia when I was around 30. I struggle with processes, and planning, and doing stuff. I came to a point where things were really bad, and I knew I needed help, but I wasn’t sure how to get it. I went online, and just googled mental health support.

I gave Health in Mind a go, it was easy to get to. Getting to places, sometimes I can have a bit of a block.I receive support for a couple of years, and that was great, really. It’s difficult to describe the difference it made to me but it really did. Now, I’m volunteering for Health in Mind. A friend once told me, ‘it’s like you’ve found your home’.

Probably, about 6 months into support I noticed it was making a difference. Each week I saw her, we spoke, she helped to put things into place. I felt understood, and accepted, and I realised that there was support. It was about finding my place, because I had never felt heard, or able to be myself.

The problems I’ve got have always felt very within me, but I’ve never known how to express it. It had to be around the right people, but now I’ve found it.

Feeling that, not to fight who I am. I’ve always struggled with, ‘I can’t be like this’, ‘I shouldn’t be like this’. Through talking, and support, and feeling like there are people who care, has helped. I spent a long part of my life thinking I could do it on my own. But, actually, we need each other.

There are certain feelings, like empathy, and sympathy, understanding. That connection, it’s powerful, and it’s quite hard to explain. It’s hard to explain why it feels good, but it feels better.

Through talking, and support, you learn, it is ok to be who you are. With anxiety and depression, where it feels like an everyday struggle just to get up, that kind of changed within me after a while through coming here.

It is about community, and feeling like there are people in the same boat. If you’re with people who you can identify with, then you can feel included.

I’ve really struggled to feel like I fit in, to feel like it’s OK to be me. I feel like I’ve turned a corner, this is who I am. I don’t mean it rudely, like it or lump it, but I feel alright to be me now, and that’s through the support and the community at Health in Mind.’
