You’re not alone – new wellbeing support for carers in Edinburgh (April, 2021)

By Paulina Szach, Support and Development Worker – Carer Support

It was with great pleasure and excitement that I joined Health in Mind at the beginning of 2021 to develop a new service for carers in Edinburgh.

Ensuring that carers are getting the support that they need is more important than ever. The COVID-19 outbreak has put immense pressures on us all. This has all put additional strain on carers who, on top of everything else, have gone above and beyond to support others through this difficult time.

The pressures of supporting someone else while you are finding things hard, can often feel impossible. Carers spend a lot of time focusing on others, and often don’t feel like they have the time to look after themselves, leading to feeling burnt out or overwhelmed. It’s important for carers to look after their own wellbeing, not only for themselves, but also to ensure they feel their best for the people they care for.

That’s why I am proud to be part of a partnership between Health in Mind, VOCAL, MILAN and Eric Liddell Centre. We are offering a range of courses and peer spaces to support the mental health and wellbeing of carers in Edinburgh. These safe spaces, courses, and events will give carers the time to explore and discover ways of keeping well and to be able to connect to a wider community of carers who understand what they are going through.

If you’re a carer and have any concerns about reaching out for support, like having limited availability, or not being familiar with Zoom, please do get in touch so that we can address any worries you are having.

We would also love for you to take part in shaping the service too. If you have any ideas or suggestions or if you would just like to learn more about it, please contact me on paulina.szach@health-in-mind.org.uk or 07435274586.
I hope to see you soon!
