Response: Rise in suicide rates in Scotland (November 2020)
26 November 2020
'The new statistics released this week show there's been a rise in the suicide rate in Scotland. The figures show that in 2019, 833 people died by suicide in Scotland. This is an increase on the previous year - we know that more needs to be done and that we all have a role to play in preventing suicide.
At Health in Mind we support the national movement in Scotland - United to Prevent Suicide. We know that there's still a lot of work to be done but together we can create change. We believe that having conversations about mental health is a key step as it's these conversations that help to raise awareness, build understanding and remind people that they are not alone.
2020 has been a challenging year and as we approach the festive period people will be facing further strains and worries. Please check in on your neighbours, family and friends and speak to someone if you are finding things difficult.'
