Target Audience
All Health and Social Care staff, including counsellors and psychotherapists, who provide support to traumatised people.
Background
It is becoming increasingly clear that past traumatic experiences can have huge impacts on life in the present moment. These often show themselves as mental distress, anxiety, fear, depression and sometimes psychotic episodes and chronic mental ill health. All workers in the mental health field come across such people, and often it is not clear how best to respond to their distress. Understanding of the impact of trauma has developed greatly in the last few years and this information offers workers some clues as to how best to be with their clients.
Aim
To provide a basic introduction to working with traumatised people.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the training participants will
- Develop their understanding of the ways in which past trauma impacts on mental wellbeing in the present
- Look at how to recognise behaviours which could be due to past traumatic experiences that are still affecting the present
- Be given the opportunity to explore ways of being with people who are traumatised that are practical and helpful
- Pay attention to the impact on themselves being with traumatised people
