First Steps: Introduction to Understanding Childhood Sexual Abuse (CSA)

Target Audience

All front line staff working with individuals who disclose or may disclose that they have a history of CSA.

Aims

  • Basic introduction to CSA and how this impacts on the physical, mental and social wellbeing of the individual and staff who work with people who have a history of CSA
  • Introduction to basic responses in dealing with disclosures of CSA
  • To raise self-awareness about CSA for frontline staff and how to look after oneself

Learning Points/Outcomes

  • To understand the definition of abuse and how people who have been abused might present
  • Facts and figures relating to abuse
  • To develop awareness of how trauma impacts on people
  • Practical and helpful ways of being with people who have been abused
  • To develop awareness of how trauma impacts on workers
  • To develop an understanding of our own support needs
  • An introduction to support agencies and networks

Trainer information

This course will be facilitated by Theo Dijkman. Theo is our Depute Chief Executive and has completed extensive psychotherapy training and is registered with UKCP.
