A community health project for people living or working in South Edinburgh

South Edinburgh Healthy Living Initiative (SEHLI) is a community health project working with local people and groups to develop programmes that enhance their health and wellbeing. Our work focuses on complementary therapies, increased physical activity, food and health, parenting, play and use of green space.  We also work to increase volunteering opportunities and build community networks.

SEHLI  runs in the communities of Burdiehouse, Southhouse, Gracemount, Liberton, Gilmerton, Moredun and the Inch.

Moredun Makes It Happen!

Working with Moredun families to make it easier to live healthier lives.

We are making small changes to increase wellbeing in Moredun, with projects including:

  • Our newsletter, written by local people for local people. View previous issues here - Jul/Aug 2010  Sept/Oct 2010 Jun/Jul 2011
  • Free recipe cards at Scotmid - simple, cheap and healthy meals available from Oct - March
  • Moredun based Picture Book - local children to start writing this book soon
  • Beautiful Moredun Photography Exhibition - to start next month in venues around Moredun
  • Moredun Open Space Project - working with local people to facilitate change in Moredun's greenspaces and / or playgrounds

 

Social Capital and Equalities Project

Improving health, wellbeing and resilience by building community connections and reducing health inequalities.  We are aiming to:

  • Provide an inclusive and accessible service targeted at disadvantaged people to achieve positive outcomes in terms of health and well-being using a community-led approach
  • Offer services that are accessible to vulnerable, isolated and disadvantaged people, which are inclusive of age, disability, ethnicity, faith/belief, gender and sexual orientation
  • Provide services that are based on the expressed needs of the community

Our proposed activities (to be determined in part by a needs assessment of service providers and local residents and volunteers) will include:

  • Offering group activities
  • Offering 1-1 support such as befriending, mentoring, peer support
  • Developing volunteering opportunities in South Edinburgh
  • Running  volunteer ‘showcase’ events in South Edinburgh by March 2011
  • Working with other agencies to run a number of community lunches for South Edinburgh
  • Working with partner agencies to offer relevant training opportunities
  • Working with other agencies to support the establishment of the South Edinburgh Time Bank
