Fans of five-a-side football are being urged to lace up their boots and enter their team for this year’s Choose Life Challenge Cup. The tournament will take place on World Suicide Prevention Day, Saturday 10 September 2016, at the excellent Hibernian Football Club Training Centre in East Lothian.
In its sixth year, the Choose Life Challenge Cup will be one of the closing events of World Suicide Prevention Week, which runs from Monday 5 until Sunday 11 September. The event highlights the positive difference sport and exercise can make to a person’s mental wellbeing.
Event organiser John Murphy is Project Worker with SHARE (Suicide, Harm Awareness, Recovery and Empathy), which is a Midlothian support group for men aged between twenty-five and fifty years of age and delivered by Scottish charity Health in Mind.
John said: “Last year, sixteen teams took part from Edinburgh, Midlothian, East Lothian and Dundee with two ladies teams making a fantastic contribution.
“The tournament is set up as a mini-league with the top teams going on to compete for the Choose Life Challenge Cup, the Health in Mind trophy and one outstanding team member receiving the Player of the Tournament Award.”
Last year, the Choose Life Challenge Cup was won by the Haddington-based Tackleberries. The competition will run from 10am until 12.30pm and will benefit from the outstanding facilities at the Hibernian Football Club Training Centre at East Mains, Ormiston near Tranent in East Lothian.
The Choose Life Challenge Cup is supported by Gamechanger, the Public Social Partnership, launched in January 2016, by Hibernian Football Club, the Hibernian Community Foundation and NHS Lothian.
Gamechanger works in partnerships to harness the power of football to help tackle inequalities and to promote social justice and is believed to be the first of its kind developed with a football club. It will deliver major projects that will create big physical and mental health benefits, create and deliver training and employability programmes, and work to improve the lives of more vulnerable people in our communities.
As well as the three founding partners, there are almost one hundred private, public and third sector organisations and individuals who have signed up as interested parties. Health in Mind is one of the interested parties.

SHARE started as a Midlothian pilot project, funded by the Choose Life suicide prevention initiative and is delivered by Health in Mind’s Orchard Centre Services in partnership with the Citizens Advice Bureau and is available for men aged 25 to 50.
